dc.description This work reports on research done to evaluate the performance of flexural strength of reinforced concrete beams made from phyllite aggregates. To estimate the bending behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams made of phyllite aggregates, 24 RC beams of same cross-sectional area with four span-to-depth ratios were produced and tested. The beams varied in tension reinforcement ranging from 1% - 2%. The experimental failure loads of the beams averaged approximately 112% of the theoretical failure loads. The average first cracking load was 25% of the ultimate loads, indicating high flexural strength of concrete made from phyllite aggregates. Deflections compared reasonably well with British Standards requirements. However, the average crack widths under service loads were greater than the limit permitted by the code indicating that the beams may encounter durability problems with time. Crack development and patterns seemed to be influenced by percentage tension reinforcement. The beams exhibited low ductility implying that such beams would not provide adequate warning prior to failure.
